What's New:

This is the place for news about my novel(s), other published works and live appearances:

Hi there! Do you have a book club and are interested in reading or featuring my upcoming novel Radioland, or The Society of Experience? I would be happy to drop-in for a personal appearance as a guest (location permitting) or take part in a Skype or email-based Q&A with your group. If you are interested, feel free to get in touch here.

___

May 1, 23 The ebook of Radioland is available! You can check out this list of psychological thrillers I contributed for Kobo while you're at it.

Jan 28, 23 I have a new short story in the world! My creepy cosmic horror-meets-rural police procedural, SOMEWHERE IN A DEAD FIELD, was published as part of the British Science Fiction Association's magazine Fission (issue #2, vol #2). It's for BFSA members only currently.

Jan 25, 2023 I've updated the RADIOLAND page with new reviews, interviews and articles (saves me time linking to them all here).

Nov 15, 22 The 15th of November is my birthday and so, while supplies last, if you send me a photo of your copy of RADIOLAND (or a proof of purchase) I will mail you a custom-made guitar pick (see here)! You can DM me on Twitter (@heymattcahill) or you can email me (matt at mattcahill dot ca).

Nov 10, 22 If you'd like to listen to my interview with CBC Toronto's Gill Deacon about my novel, RADIOLAND, you can stream it here: https://www.cbc.ca/listen/live-radio/1-82/clip/15946255 .

Coming up in November! (pt 1) If you're going to be in Toronto on November 2nd, I'm inviting you to the book launch for Radioland. It's happening at Burdock Brewery, 1184 Bloor St. W (a few steps away from Dufferin subway) and I'll be joined by fellow authors A.G. Pasquella (launching his novella collection, Welcome to the Weird America) and Amber McMillan (launching her poetry collection This is a Stickup).

Coming up in November! (pt 2) I'm sooo excited (and nervous!) to be interviewed by CBC Radio One's Gill Deacon for her program Here and Now Toronto. It's going to be LIVE on November 1st @ 4:45pm (and it will be archived for future listening). I hope you can tune in!

Oct 15, 2022 I had the immense pleasure of being interviewed by nationally syndicated radio host Richard Crouse (alongside author Robert Harris and, um, Stan Lee). It's a really in-depth interview (much more than I was expecting) that touches on the mental health aspects of Radioland. The interview has been made permanently available and you can listen to it here.

Oct 4, 2022 Radioland makes the cut for CBC Books' 40 Canadian books we can't wait to read in October. Woo-hoo!

Sept 1, 2022 CBC Books has picked Radioland for their 2022 fall fiction picks. Very exciting!

July 22, 2022 It's almost been a year without an update! Cover reveal and pre-order announcement for my second novel, Radioland. You can read about it here. I'm so very excited for this, and if you are able to show your support by pre-ordering that would be tremendous.

July 26, 2021 Wesley Evonshire, a short story of mine, is now available in issue #7 of Future Fragment. This issue is free of charge (or PWYC) for the digital version, but don't miss out on the gorgeous print edition. Grab it here

Jan 15, 2021 My second novel, Radioland, will be published with Wolsak & Wynn! Look for it in the Fall of 2022 (soon!). More information on Radioland here.

Nov 10, 2020 Parlour, my contribution for the special pulp fiction edition of The Quarantine Review is out now. You can purchase this issue here!

Oct 7, 2020 My short story, Wesley Evonshire will be appearing in Fusion Fragment next summer. I'll provide more info when it's published.

Sept 23, 2020 My short story, Parlour will be published in The Quarantine Review mid-autumn. When the release date is known, I'll provide more info.

June 14, 2020 A quick update: Radioland is finally beginning to do the rounds of publishers due to COVID-19 delays. In the meantime, I've started a third novel, which you can read about more on my blog. I'm also on Instagram and Twitter.

December 5, 2018 So...if you've been coming to this page over the last year you wouldn't be blamed for thinking Jeez, Cahill sure hasn't been active in 2018, and the truth is that I've been working hard on my next novel, Radioland. The good news is that it's nearly done, and I will be updating this (*blows dust off shelf*) site appropriately with a shmancy new synopsis, etc. So, stay tuned, and thanks for your support!

October 2, 2017 My essay from the Humber Literary Review, On Madness Within Imagination, has been selected for inclusion in The Best Canadian Essays of 2017. This will be available in-store and online beginning in November.

January 24, 2017 The Society of Experience has been shortlisted for the 2016 ReLit Awards - I am honoured!

December 31, 2016 I have an essay included in the latest issue of the Humber Literary Review, which is themed around mental health. My essay, On Madness Within Imagination, looks at the ways we portray madness in fiction and asks whether we need to rethink some unexamined bad habits.

November 7, 2016 Details of my whirlwind tour of Alberta (Nov 9th - 13th) can be found here.

October 26, 2016 Found Press, who has published my stories in their unique digital singlet format, is experimenting with the idea of creating limited print editions of select authors' stories. I'm happy to say that one of those chosen is Snowshoe, my spooky piece about a father trying to get his son to sleep only to realize the boy is haunted by something more ominous than the wind outside. This is well-timed since I read from Snowshoe on October 25th for the International Festival of Authors and it got a great reception. I have in my possession 15 copies - that is the extent of the initial print run since they are handbound. I am selling them for $10 each (optionally signed, if you wish). Or, if you haven't yet read The Society of Experience (longlisted for the Sunburst Award, fave of Harper's Bazaar magazine, as well as Emily Saso's favourite book of 2015) I will sell a bundle of Snowshoe and The Society of Experience (regular $32 if bought individually) for $28 (and yes, optionally signed, if you wish). Crazy cheap bargain Cahill stop it. Obviously, I only have 15 copies of Snowshoe, and while there will most likely be more in production (I can tell you there is a lot of interest from independent bookstores here in Toronto in this and other FP titles) because they are hand-made they don't exactly slide off a conveyor by the hundreds. In other words, there's no guarantee when more will be available. If you are interested, get in touch: matt [at] mattcahill [dot] ca. Note: postage is extra (but reasonable)

October 15, 2016 I'm going to be reading at the Literary Press Group's Boos & Books event on October 25th, which is part of the International Festival of Authors. I'm thrilled to have been selected as well as honoured to be part of the IFOA. Because it's a Halloween-themed event, I'm going to be reading an excerpt from my short story, Snowshoe (if you haven't read it, it's available at Found Press for the price of a cup of coffee - super cheap!). Meanwhile, November 9th - 13th I'm going to be on a tour of Alberta, reading/promoting The Society of Experience. Current dates are as follows:
November 9 - Camrose (University of Alberta campus)
November 12 - Calgary (location tbd)
November 13 - Edmonton (Audreys Books)
Somewhere in here I'm hoping to make an appearance in Red Deer - stay tuned! Lastly, I have an essay coming out in the next Humber Literary Review (due in November). This is a themed issue whose topic is mental health. My essay explores fictional depictions of madness in contemporary mainstream media, their worrisome undertones, and the challenges with working with the idea of madness.

August 17, 2016 I'm going to be appearing at Lit Live, an ongoing reading series in Hamilton on September 4th, to launch their 2016/2017 season. I am the sole fiction reader (along with poets such as Jacob Mooney & Joanne Arnott). It should be a great turnout and I hope to see you there.

June 8, 2016 The Society of Experience has been longlisted for the 2016 The Sunburst Awards, "for excellence in Canadian literature of the fantastic." I'm nominated alongside Margaret Atwood, Andrew Pyper, and André Alexis (among other great writers). The shortlist will be announced July 5th. Feels great to have the book on an awards list!

May 15, 2016 I have two new gigs lined up over the next few months: June 10th @ The Belljar (2072 Dundas St W, Toronto) I will be reading from The Society of Experience as part of a launch for indie musician Kyp Harness' debut novel, Wigford Rememberies. We will be joined by poet Mark Sampson, reading from his new collection, Weathervane. Details of the event can be found here. July 6th @ McNally Robinson Booksellers (1120 Grant Avenue, Winnipeg, MB) I will be joining the ChiSeries once more, this time for my first reading outside of Ontario! Also reading that night will be David Neil Lee -- we will be joined in conversation by Chadwick Ginther and S.M. Beiko. Details can be found here.

April 25, 2016 Some more information on the Ad Astra convention: I will be appearing on Sunday the 1st of May at 2pm, on a panel called The Trials and Tribulations of Writing About Time Travel (along with fellow authors Kari Maaren and Kelly Robson). Don't forget Authors For Indies Day on Saturday, where I will be at Type Books from 12pm to 1pm. And then, I go to Ottawa the following week, to Patty Boland’s (101 Clarence Street) on May 3rd @ 7pm.

April 12, 2016 Late April/early May is going to be busy with appearances. First up, I will be participating in the 35th annual Ad Astra Convention (happening April 29-May 1 in Toronto) - I don't yet know which date my panel will be on, but I'll post here when I find out. Then, on April 30 I will be taking part in Authors For Indies Day, working the floor at Type Books during their 10th Anniversary (Queen West location) from 12pm to 1pm. Lastly, I will be reading in Ottawa on Tuesday May 3rd at Patty Boland’s (101 Clarence Street). Like I said: it's busy!

February 14, 2016 A reminder that I'm on Goodreads, so if you like to use that platform to find recommendations and/or share books with friends, feel free to seek me out!

January 18, 2016 My novel, The Society of Experience is now availble in ebook (Kobo) format! See here for more.

December 15, 2015 My new short story, Second World is available. I'm happy to have it out there, and you can check it out at Found Press.

No cover, but there is a PWYC charge. All writers will be presenting current works. For more information: Pivot Readings website

November 4, 2015 I was interviewed by All Lit Up about The Society of Experience (along with authors Andrew Battershill and Erna Buffie). Read the Q&A here.

October 26, 2015 I was recently assigned the task of answering the Proust Questionnaire for Open Book Toronto. While Proust himself did not conceive of this battery of eclectic, often personal questions, it carries his name. So, if you would like to know my favourite colour, what makes me miserable, and what my favourite virtue is, please have a look.

October 5th, 2015 There's a website for The Society of Experience! It includes a streaming music playlist featuring songs and artists featured in the novel, as well as a map showing the Toronto locations mentioned within. Find it here!

September 17, 2015 Whoa, Nelly! Harper's Bazaar picks The Society of Experience as #11 on their Top 15 must-reads of fall 2015, along with Margaret Atwood, Salman Rushdie, Isabel Allende, Patti Smith, and David Mitchell!

September 17, 2015 I was interviewed by Open Book, regarding my upcoming appearance at Word On The Street, in Toronto. I discuss the difference between Ontario and Toronto, as well as reflect on what makes both tick.

July 13, 2015: Some more anticipatory hype, as The Society of Experience gets a lovely write up in Quill & Quire's fall titles preview, under "Stretching Genres":
